Calculation Process of IELTS Scores
The IELTS has four components: Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking. Each of them is scored separately on the band scale of 0-9. The overall IELTS band score is the arithmetic mean or the average of the four sections. These scores are then rounded off by using official rules.
Steps to Calculate Scores
- Each section is marked individually and converted to a band score.
- Add the four band scores and divide by 4 to get the average.
- Round the average to the nearest whole or half band.
Rounding Rules
- If the average ends in .25, round up to .5 (e.g., 6.25 → 6.5).
- If the average ends in .75, round up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 → 7.0).
- If the average is exactly on .00 or .50, keep it as is (e.g., 6.00 or 6.50).
